Queen For A Day

Do you know Susanna, yet? If you don't, you're sure to fall in love with her at first meeting. She's the one who set many imaginations soaring with her Winged Messengers project. Susanna is generous and open and so very talented. She's also Queen For A Day in spots all around blogland.
I want to tell you about how Susanna's project is making a difference to second graders in Missouri. Before I can do that, I'll need to back up a little. Every morning before we go to morning meeting, I have the class line up in front of the mirror. I've taught them to pause for a moment, really look at themselves and then say out loud "You are lookin' good today!" It starts our day in a fun, silly, and completely affirming way. So much of what kids see in the world around them tells them that they look wrong. I want them to start each day knowing that they look great. Just the way they are.

So. When I received Susanna's Winged Messenger I wanted to hang it in a place where it could really touch a lot of people. But where? The mall? Not very original. The baseball stadium? The cleaner crew will just toss it. Where then? Ah ha! My own classroom.

Every morning when my students tell themselves how great they look, so does Susanna.

My dear Relyn,

Your post about Susanna touched me the most. What an inspiring and affirmative action you gift your kids. It brought tears to my eyes. Our children need more teachers like you.

I'll carry this message in my heart and in my actions...

Relyn, what a wonderful thing to teach your students!!

The one messenger I wish I would have kept is also attached to a mirror in a restaurant. So that everyone will know that they are beautiful.

Thank you for all of your help!

Well, this just makes me soooo happy, Relyn! I can just imagine you all looking in the mirror and saying "You are lookin' good today!" *huge grin* YOU are the COOLEST teacher!

Thank you for making me feel so special today. I was NOT expecting this when I woke up. Wow. I am so lucky to have such amazing people - YOU! - in my life. Thank you. And thank you for helping me with my winged messenger project. It's just so much better because of you.:)

What a wonderful story! I was especially touched because a coworker showed me a drawing that her 9 year old son did yesterday. He drew himself with scars on his face (leftovers from a vicious dog attack)....underneath he wrote that he was ugly...that people are mean to him. If only he had a teacher like you! What a great way to put Susanna's love and wings to work!

I absolutely LOVE that you do that with your students, Relyn! And you're absolutely right. Kids are inundated with the message that they must conform to a certain standard and they get so little confirmation that they are perfect just as they are. What a boost to their sense of self which they sooo need. You are an angel! I think we should crown you one of these days!
