Small Delights

Oh, I have so much to tell you!

I have to tell you about the way that YoYo Ma swayed toward the music like a sunflower toward the sun. About sea lions that teach themselves to smile. About little girls who laugh delightedly and dream of growing up to be marine biologists. About little boys who have a goal to write a story that everyone will love. About the way that I always walk down the school's halls with two second graders attached to my sides by the hands they hold and the love they feel. About how badly penguins actually smell, and the black giraffe I didn't know could exist. About the chimpanzee who held his own feet as he slept, and all the beds we jumped on this weekend. About music that was so marvelous, so MAN ALIVE, that all I did was cry. And cry.

Oh, I have so much to tell you!

But, until then. A little story that I told my friend, Pixiedust.

Your bird made me think of the most amazing sight I saw this weekend. We were at a red light and I looked up. The power lines were covered in birds. I mean COVERED! Not hundreds. Thousands. I mean that without one bit of exaggeration. That was cool enough in itself. But then. One bird flew in and snuggled himself down among his buddies. And all down the line, literally thousands of birds flew up one by one and settled again just a tiny space to the right. It was like watching piano keys that whoosh off the piano in a cartoon. It was amazing.

Those birds have it right. It may take a little bit of readjusting, but there's always room for one more.

Both images were taken this weekend. This wonderful, wonderful weekend.

What a beautiful post. I still have the image of those birds making room for one more, snuggling and rubbing their feathers against each other ever so softly. Many thanks.

Greetings from London.

Oh goodness. I sat beneath a traffic light yesterday late afternoon and the EXACT same thing happened. EXACTLY the way you described! How cool is that? I sat there wishing I had a camera with me, but if I had I may have missed that one bird.

I feel as if we were watching them together & I just LOVE it when this happens!!

Hi Relyn,

Glad you had a great time - apart from the smell of the penguins! You're right, they DO! I'm always amazed how birds can grip a thin, thin cable! Looking forward to the stories.

Relyn,

Such a beautiful post especially the story of the birds. I too have been watching them more and more on my drives into the city and seeing them all huddled together, they have it right. We all need one another to get through this life.

The photo is wonderful...your daughter is darling. You made me laugh because that penquin house does smell...but, when it is very hot at the zoo, at least it is a cool place to hide for a little while. I love your use of words.

First of all, beautiful photo of you and your family!

Your story reminded me of a PBS video I see between programs. A composer is trying to come up with an idea and he's stumped. He looks out the window and he sees the birds on the powerlines, sitting on different lines. They look like notes and he comes up with a melody.

I love the thought of your birds gathering!

Have you ever seen that Pixar short film called "For the Birds"? Your story reminded me of it...it wasn't as sweet as your story but it made me laugh.

Did you get a picture of the black giraffe?? I didn't know they existed either...how interesting! Does it still have a pattern on it's skin or is it pure black?

Aw, I'm glad that you had such a terrific weekend, Relyn. So many happy memories were made. Did the black giraffe still have giraffe spots? And isn't it wonderful when music can have such a deep effect on us? And to see Yo Yo Ma play live - wow! What did your daughter think of his music?

I enjoyed Pixiedust's post about the power line of black birds. That's one of my favourite sights during the winter season...clouds of black birds flying together in the air, silently and, if what I heard is true, with their closed. I like your observation...that there's always room for one more. That says alot about you, Relyn. :)
