Things We Should Say More Often

Each year, my students love Kid President.  This video of his inspired a list of our own.

Things We Should Say More Often
Inspired by Kid President

Say, "Thank you!" to teachers and other people who help us.
"You are nice."
"It is not OK to be mean to people."
"WOW!  You rock!"
"Thank you." a lot more than we do.
"Please be nice."
"No farting during class."
"You are awesome!"
"Wow!  You are really good at that."
"It’s OK to be sad sometimes."
"I like you, you are funny."  Don’t say it if they aren’t funny.
"Amen" after you pray.
"You are SO cool."
"Good job!"
"Good try."
"Don’t worry – you’ll do better next time."
"Better luck next time.  I know you can do it."

Happy Back to School, friends.

A Different Kind of Friday Faves

This photo was a gift from my friend, Se'lah.

I was looking at my calendar yesterday and I realized that Mother's Day is only three weeks away.  To tell the truth, I usually let it sneak up on me and then find myself rushing around like a crazy woman trying to find a gift for my mom and Jeffrey's that can convey what's impossible to say: "I love you.  I thank you.  You make my life possible.  You are wonderful, amazing, nearly miraculous."  You know, just the little thoughts that add up to a speechless kind of love.

And, we really are blessed, Jeffrey and I.  Our moms have been pastor's wives for nearly 80 years between them.  They've raised four children, and enjoyed eight grandchildren.  They've taught me about the kind of home I want to make and the kind of woman I want to be.

Well.  What do you do for two women like that? My answer is, I try to find a gift that is as special as they are.  And, then, I write a card that doesn't say enough - not nearly enough about who they are to me.

As I was shopping for them, I visited one of my favorite stores, Uncommon Goods.  I love their whimsical selections, and I really love their blog, The Goods.  I spent hours following the links from this interview with Richard Upchurch.  We have so many spending options, don't we?  I want to spend my money with a company that tries to do a little good, even while they are selling goods.  I really love all the personalized options, too.  Uncommon Goods showcases the work of amazing artists, and I love their support of Reach Out and Read.

I had so much fun shopping for our moms.  But, I got a bit distracted by all the goodies I wanted to add to my own wishlist.  You know how much I love lists.  Maybe this one will help you as you shop for your moms.  Or, for yourself.

I've always loved typography; especially the ampersand.  I just adore the whimsy of this.
I think it's perfect for a mom who just happens to be a wonderful hostess.

Sloane and I both fell in love with this crazy glowing dinosaur.
It's full of bio-luminescent plankton and we have GOT to have one!
It might just be perfect for a new mom who has to stumble awake several times a night.

Isn't this sweet?  I love the idea of tucking pink roses into this tiny wonder  and placing it
on the nightstand when my mother-in-law comes for a visit.  It could also be a perfect gift
for the amazing aunt or  older friend you love so much.  Why not use Mother's Day to thank
the other women who have mothered you?

I don't know about you, but I have been searching for a stylish way to haul around all my library books.  This tote would be great for a bookish mom.  Or one who goes to the farmer's market every week.

If you ask me, a woman can never have too many pairs of beautiful earrings.  Uncommon Goods has so much gorgeous jewelry.  I finally narrowed my choice down to my two favorite pairs of earrings.  The pair on the left is made from recycled sake bottles - I love that.  The pair on the right are handmade of mixed metals - so beautiful!

OK, I found it - a gift that's a perfect combination of tech and cozy.  This handy gadget can turn a smart phone into a projector.  Perfect for the mom who always has half the neighborhood kids in her backyard.  (Or wishes she did.)  Now you can give the neighbors one more reason to love you - backyard drive in movies.

Do you have a mom who is always taking pictures?  Is she an artist?  Someone who sees beauty in imperfection?  If she is, let's introduce her to the Diana.  This gift is a perfect combo - a book and a camera.  Add lots of love, and a few sweet words on a card, and Mom is bound to be thrilled.

I hope you've had fun exploring my little list.  One of my lovely readers is going to be really happy this Mother's Day.  I have a $25 gift certificate to Uncommon Goods to give away.  If you would like to enter, leave a comment and tell me which of my picks was your favorite and why.  Or, tell me what else you found over at Uncommon Goods that you would choose for yourself.

Be good to all the lovely, mothering women in your life this year.

57 Kinds of Awesome

an old picture of Sloane, and my favorite

I have to confess, I don't feel especially awesome today.  I woke up counting all the things I had not accomplished this weekend that I needed to.  I began my day feeling slightly panicked at how behind I already was and it wasn't even 6:00 a.m. yet.

Well, I have a few no-fail habits for times like this.  The first thing I do is spend time in prayer and commit my time and my priorities to the Lord.  I spent my getting ready time singing worship songs instead of running around frantically trying to get another thing done.  Then, I did what I always do when the going gets tough - I began to count my blessings.  57 was the random number that popped into my head, so I present you with a new list...

57 Kinds of Awesome, part one

  1. The sunrise for about two weeks now has been completely awe inspiring.
  2. Friends who really know me and love me anyway
  3. I have a little boy in my class who brings me a flower from his mother's garden every time the current one fades.
  4. I love my job, even when there is too much to do.
  5. I serve a Father who cares deeply when I am overwhelmed and tired.  When I feel that way, He has promised to let me soar like the eagles if I simply rest in Him.  (Isaiah 40:31)
  6. I have so many photoshoots this autumn that I am well on my way to the new camera I've been saving for.
  7. Sloane turns 13 in two weeks. I am so excited about the surprises we have planned for her!
  8. Music
  9. Understanding, helpful friends
  10. These oh-so-amazing leaves!
  11. The bone deep knowledge that God is faithful.

Silly Celebration, take six

So, I have this tradition of honoring crazy dates with lists.  Did you notice today's date?  It's 11/12/13.  This date won't come again for 100 years.  Kind of cool, hunh?

A List of Eleven, Twelve, and Thirteen
all lists in no particular order

Eleven ways to celebrate Thanksgiving

  • Pack up a shoe box for Operation Christmas Child.  Nothing makes me so aware of my blessings as giving to someone who has so much less than I do.
  • Write letters to the people who have impacted your life.  Track down the teacher or Girl Scout leader who made such a difference in your life.  Email the college professor who inspired you to think in a newer, bigger way.
  • Before you can truly be grateful, you must be light-hearted.  Choose to forgive.  Do it now.
  • Make a Blessings Book out of scrapbook paper and pass it around after dinner this Thanksgiving.
  • Reread your Blessings Book next year.
  • Consider adding a family service project to your long weekend of cooking, eating, shopping, and playing.
  • Invite friends over for Thanksgiving dinner.  You never really know who doesn't have family to celebrate with - unless you ask.
  • As you rush around preparing, slow down.  Remember, who you share the meal with is much more important than the feast or decorations.
  • Whether or not prayer is a regular practice of yours, take a quiet moment to truly thank God for all your blessings.
  • Be lavish with your affection.  These nutty relatives that drive you crazy are yours.  Yours. You know you love them.  Tell them so.
  • Host an After-Thanksgiving dessert buffet and gather with your family of friends.  Tell them how much they mean to you.

Twelve Thanksgiving books even the grown ups will enjoy

  • Cranberry Thanksgiving by Wende and Harry Devlin
  • Millie and the Macy's Parade by Shana Corey
  • Balloons Over Broadway by Melissa Sweet
  • A Plump and Perky Turkey by Teresa Bateman
  • 10 Fat Turkeys by Tony Johnston
  • Over the River, A Turkey's Tale by Derek Anderson
  • 'Twas the Night Before Thanksgiving by Dav Pilkey
  • One is a Feast for a Mouse by Judy Cox
  • A Turkey for Thanksgiving by Eve Bunting
  • Beauty and the Beaks: A Turkey's Cautionary Tale by Mary Jane Auchs
  • Mary's First Thanksgivng by Kathy-jo Wargin
  • Thanks for Thanksgiving by Julia Markes

Thirteen chores you should do before the holidays arrive

  • Drag out your winter clothes and coats.  Switch your closets around.
  • Before you launder everything (see above) try this.
  • You know that coat you forgot to take to the cleaners last March?  Do it now.
  • Depending on where you live, stock up on rock salt, wood for the fireplace, deicer, etc.
  • Have your kids try on their snow gear, especially the boots.  Shop now.  Once the snow falls, it's too late.
  • You, too. (see above)
  • Buy more Christmas lights.  Do it now.  You know you'll need them.
  • Consider creating a hot chocolate station.
  • Set a reasonable budget before the shopping bug bites.
  • Before the madness begins, make a list of the things you love most about the holidays.  Do those things.
  • Start writing your cards now.  Take the time to make it fun instead of a chore.
  • Schedule a pedicure.  Take a great magazine to read.
  • Schedule one Saturday afternoon at home completely alone.  Do nothing at all.  Sigh.  Now you're ready.

Secrets of Adulthood

I have mentioned Gretchen Rubin's book The Happiness Project before.  That book inspired this list.  The idea behind Secrets of Adulthood is that they are lessons you can't fully know or appreciate till you are an adult.  As I read her list, I had to write one of my own.  Of course I did.

* If you have a budget and stick to it, you will have more money than you have ever had.
Take extremely good care of your vehicle, your teeth, and your money.
Each choice you make can impact the rest of your life.  We don't have time to think about every choice, so it is vital to form good habits.
Take care of your character and your reputation will take care of itself.
Do hard things.
Be brave.
Be passionate, but remember that not everyone will share those passions.
Invest in a good mattress, good pillows, and great sheets.
Call your parents at least once a week.
Education is more than grades, it's a way of life.
Learn to cook at least five different, excellent meals and keep all those ingredients at the ready.
Always have plenty of toilet paper, Advil, and tampons on hand.
Whenever you can, take the scenic route.
Always ride the ferry.
You may often regret what you say, but will rarely regret what you do.
Laugh every day.

What about you, friends?  What are you Secrets of Adulthood?

These amazing rocks are from Glacier National Park.

a different sort of accounting

It's my 43rd birthday today.  I don't have a wish list at all.  I've already been given so much.

just some of the blessings of the past year
* Jeffrey * Sloane * my parents, and the happy childhood they provided * my brother, and the additional family he gave me to love * my in-laws, who raised my most excellent husband * the unshakable, unchangeable fact that God is the provider of all my needs * that my niece is also my namesake * the way that God uses the most difficult times to teach me and help me grow * weekend road trips with my parents * that we live only four hours (or less) from 4 incredible art museums * the way we can ask to become more like Jesus, and He answers with a resounding, "Yes!" * the way this Earth is so filled with beauty.  Truly, "the Earth declares the glory of the Lord." * friendships that have lasted through recent moves and separations * forgiveness and renewal of a treasured friendship * a new sewing machine * Jeffrey's steady love, no matter the trial; like a sure hand at my back as I climb rickety stairs. * Sloane's enthusiasm and willingness to share her thoughts and life with me in such an open-hearted way. * my mother is cancer free - praise God! * all the happy changes we made to our home * my camera and the people who let me take their pictures * time at the ocean, baring my heart and finding love and acceptance in return * the chance to meet new blogging friends *my brother-in-law's 19th surgery went so very well and we all had a terrific time together this summer * my in-laws are getting a new house * the chance to spend time this summer with old friends * our small group and the surety that those friends pray for me and mine every single day *  a magical road trip * getting back in touch with my high school besties * Life!  Oh, I am thankful for this wonderful, beautiful, messy, busy, crazy, marvelous life! *

inspired by Sloane

Well, I think I've done it.  I've managed to pass along the list writing compulsion to my daughter.  Today's wonderful list was created and inspired entirely by Sloane and a friend at school. The first 13 entries are theirs.  The rest, we came up with together.

Things That Are Impossible To Enjoy
* eating or smelling a Durian (This is a fruit that smells like cat pee.) *
* watching someone enjoy eating school food *
* someone stealing your last Oreo *
* forgetting your homework *
* eating school food *
* writer's block *
* push ups*
* forgetting to set the timer when baking cookies *
* Operation Red Jericho by Joshua Mowll*
* your favorite shoes getting too small *
* having to run the mile in PE *
* extra lit circle reading *
* crybabies *
* having your cell phone battery die in the middle of a conversation *

The Summer List

Week 52 of the Wednesday lists
I always have several to do lists going, and like every other teacher I know, I have quite a long list of things I hope to accomplish in the next two months. I thought it might be a nice change of pace to make another kind of to do list for this summer. As I began writing, I kept finding myself writing my normal to do list. I decided to strike a compromise with myself. For every need-to-do item I add to my list, I would add two just-for-fun items. Hmmmm....

a passion for lists

Cat in the Hat

Week 50 of the Wednesday lists.  I love lists.  Oh, boy do I love lists.  At the moment I have 26 active lists.  For fun, here's my list of lists.  I took the picture of my friend on Dr. Suess' birthday.  It doesn't really have anything to do with lists, but it sure is fun.
