Sunday Morning Poetry

Companions

She lived with words in a tall white house.

Hundreds of books line her shelves.

They smelled like time, they smelled like rain.

Fanning the pages, she smiled.

I was ten when I found this friend.

Cherry pie steaming on top of the stove.

We sat till it was cool.

She lit up like a lantern when I rang.

Tell me about your teachers, your work.

Who's the bad boy again?

Have you seen that dog that bit you under the eye?

The plates were stacked beside the pie.

Her husband had died before we were born.

But she didn't live alone.

She lived with words.

~Naomi Shihab Nye

Happy Sunday, my friends.

So lovely, Relyn! Naomi Shihab Nye is one of my favorite poets, and this poem is pure magic. My whole life is about words, writing them and reading them, maybe that's why I feel such a kinship with you. xoxo

That is a really beautiful poem. I have just enjoyed catching up with all of your recent posts. I love that street art and I liked your post about films. My all time favourite is Withnail and I. I love Amelie, Moulin Rouge too. I watched The Company of Wolves today which I have not seen for a long time and loved it! I see someone mentioned Bringing Up Baby which is great. I also love Teacher's Pet with Doris Day and Clark Gable-hilarious!

I need to add some of her poetry to my collection, for home and school. I adore this poem. It reminds me of a retired teacher I used to visit when I was in 7th grade. He would quiz me on math and talk to me about books. I loved him, and this poem just brought him back to me ... and tears are flowing. He was a special person in my life and passed away when I was a little older.

Thanks for sharing this poem. It will be a dear one to me.

I grew up in Texas, and when NSN was a very young poet she came to my school. It made an indelible impression on me.

I don't know this one; surprisingly, because books are amongst my very favorite companions.

Thank you for the lovely poem.
