a prayer for my daughter

Sloane, first day of Kindergarten

Sloane begins Jr. High this morning.  It's a big milestone, and it feels as though Jeffrey and I are beginning a new chapter in our lives as parents.  I feel excited for Sloane and proud of the young woman she is becoming.  I also feel the heavy weight of raising a godly woman in today's sexually aware, quickly mature society.  More than ever, I feel the need to cover my child with prayer.  I know in my heart that God's will is the only real safety we ever have.  But, I feel that to be truer than it has ever been.  Like every morning of her life, I pray for Sloane, and I commit her into the Father's keeping.  This is my prayer for my daughter.  It is my prayer for your daughters, too.

Lord,
I ask you to keep Sloane safe in mind and spirit and body.  Most of all, I ask you to keep her faith strong as she seeks to serve you in a world that doesn't believe.  Help her to be like Jesus so that her life will be her witness.
As she walks the halls of her Jr. High, I know she will encounter unkindness.  She will feel ignored, left out, and misunderstood.  Help her to give love in return for hate, kindness in return for meanness, and forgiveness even when it is not sought.
I know she will be asked to give up her innocence in exchange for acceptance.  She will be tempted to disobey, to curse, and to mock.  Help her to cling to your Word.  Help her to "think on these things."  Philippians 4:8
As she grows older, she will like boys and be liked by them in return.  Help her to give her heart carefully and to save her body completely.  Help her to remember that you already know who she is to marry, if she remains in your plan.  Help her to choose to "do him good... all the days of her life."  Proverbs 31:12
As she begins to grow into womanhood, I know she will question who she is and who she wants to become.  Help her to know, bone deep, that you have a plan for her.  Jeremiah 29:11  Help her to seek your will and to follow you all of her days.
Thank you for my daughter, Lord.  Thank you for the very great joy of being her mother.  Make me worthy of such a gift.  Make me into the mother that she needs.  Give me wisdom.  Help me to show Sloane every day of her life that she is my greatest blessing, exactly as she is.

Blessings to your Sloane as she begins this new, big milestone in life. May the Lord be watching over her, and all young people as they begin this new school year. Blessings to you, Relyn, and your family as you navigate new territory. Your prayer is sooo beautiful. :o) God and LOVE, our best "armor" to put on as we greet each new day, no matter our age. What a wonderful prayer, I hope you shared it with her too. She is so pretty and from the things you've written about her I know she's beautiful inside too.

Oh lovely dear Relyn, may God grant you all and more
I went through this everytime there was life shift for my children..beginning at preschool when they would be away from me...me not in sight
trust ...hard to do...why we are to pray without ceasing...God next to us chatting away and listening
My children are now all grown up, married and parents....phew...
now it is they who join me on their knees in prayer for their little ones

Such a beautiful girl. with a great Mom and God by her side she will do well. There will always be trials to go through but with a good foundation she will rise above. Hugs and Prayers.

A beautiful prayer, Relyn. Strangely, it appeared in my reader in the few minutes before I took my daughter (who as you know has missed years of school due to illness) to her first class of what we hope will be a part-time school year. It was lovely to be able to pray with you at that moment! For both our daughters, and for girls taking big steps out into the world everywhere. You've captured so well the true beauty of a girl's soul in this prayer. I'm happy to say my daughter really enjoyed her class.
