How I Named My Blog Day

I was visiting Beth tonight and was inspired by this post. I thought I'd play along.

Some time early in 2008 I decided to start a blog. It took me some time to get started because I was searching for the perfect name. I thought about it for a while. A longish while. I really wanted to get it right since I had a feeling it would become a real part of my identity. Was I ever right about that.

Tonight I went in the Sparkle Room and dug out my old journal. Here are some blog names I considered: Daily Joy, Scatter Joy, Giggles and Glitter, A Thing With Feathers, Glass Slipper, Sursum Corda, Once Upon A Time, Cabinet of Curiosities, A Net for Catching Joy...

After nearly four weeks of pondering I wrote this in my journal:

Leap Day 29 February 2008
I am pretty excited thinking about getting started on my blog. I finally have a name. comeandsitbymyfire. Like it? Great, hunh? I knew Brent would help me think of the best name. When I told him about it, he said, "What about your favorite poem?"

Believe it or not, magic bean buyer is already gone, but I think I like come and sit by my fire better anyway. I think I am going to go ahead and set up my account this weekend. I am so excited about this chance for a new creative endeavor. I can hardly wait.
... ... ... ...
Well, I did it. It's almost one in the morning and I am now a blogger. Just writing my profile has been lots of fun. I don't really have expectations of my blog. Right now I am most excited because this is a wonderful way to do some visual journaling. I do love the scratch of a pen on paper, but what I really love is technology. I think of this as Jeffrelynews [family paper newsletter] on steroids. A chance to make lists and to connect with others. I think this is going to be a lot of fun.
I was right. On every count. Come Sit By My Fire is much better than Magic Bean Buyer. Brent does have wonderful ideas. I do use my blog to make lists and connect with others. And, of course, I think blogging is a lot of fun.

What about you? Where did your blog name come from?

If you're curious, here's my first blog post. Poor thing is still commentless.

your blog is also a soft spot for us to come to at the end of long day, where we feel like we're the holding the hand of an old friend....who makes us feel like we matter :)

I'm so glad you played along....

Your blog name is what made me click on it. I have been around many counsel(sp?)or is it council(?) fires..anyway...the fires the native americans sat around
I sat around many in Door COunty at the CLearing...what an experience
So your name drew me to it...and it didn't disappoint...we gather around and listen

"A Thing With Feathers"?? That one made me laugh, although I'm sure you must have had a reason to consider it. You blog name suits you well, I always feel very relaxed and peaceful after visiting you.

As for my blog name...pretty easy to figure out. Between my daughter, her friends and my own friends always asking me for advice, opinions and general "pep" talks...I was always saying that somehow I had turned into everyone's mom (a role I never would have imagined).

I wish I could really come sit by your fire and have a long talk on books, teaching, blogging...
I found my name in about ten minutes by thinking of some of the beautiful things around me. I started my blog right after I lost my mum and I needed distraction so nothing too serious would do. I added 'bells' as a part of my identity - being a teacher- and because it rhymed. If it was a different season the name would probably be totally different and I do miss the 'books' element.
Nice chatting to you.

Sue, It's from the Emily Dickinson poem. The whole line is Hope is a thing with feathers. I never thought of how funny it sounded if you didn't know the poem. Now I'm giggling.

It was a random moment and occurance that triggered the name Loose Lemons...my friend Jayne was encouraging me to start a blog and I was very reluctant to do so!

I am not sure how I first came to your blog however the name bids me to come and stay awhile :)

It is the most perfect name for your blog. Welcoming, warm, accepting, cozy, mesmerizing.

You were wise to spend time to come up with the perfect one. Mine was much more of a knee-jerk response, but it's served me well so far.

I loved your blog as soon as I saw it, Relyn...and the name too! YOur other choices are equally wonderful...though not sure about the Magic Bean Buyer ;o) You blog's name is inviting us to share as much as you do...and so it is. My own blog's name came to me very easily, as it was a screen name I was using back in 2005 at a knitting & crafts forum, it became almost like an alter ego of sorts...haha... Pink Purl--pink is my favorite color, purl is a stitch in knitting one of my fave things to do. So it made sense at the time when I began blogging in 2006. I'm always curious about blog names and where they come from. :o) Happy Day, my friend (HUGS))

I love knowing how you came to have your blog name. It is a very good one and I love coming to sit by your fire often. Your lists are the very best.

I decided on my blog by making lists of positive words because I wanted it to be only positive thoughts and stories. So often we concentrate on the negatives and I wanted a place to concentrate on the positives. Many of the ideas were taken, but I ended up with Delights of the Heart. It was for me first and then for anyone that wanted to join me.

It is interesting isn't it how we ponder what we want to be known as? My first choice was Shadows of Me, I wanted the blog to be bits of me but not too revealing you know a little bit of mystery!! Now it is called A Box of Chocolates, because as Forrest said, Life is like a box of chocolates, you never what you'll get! And not much mystery in it, I blab too much hahaha!!

Congratulations Relyn on your whole month of every day blogging! As my boss likes to say (to many): "YOU are a Rock Star!" And I, too, love the name of your blog. I also love that you call the comments Fireside Chats! That is cutest of all!
Happy December to you! Will you keep blogging every day?!

I really like the name of your blog. Very cool! My blog name came from a storage bin that was in my parents garage, when I moved I saw that my mom had written with a sharpie on the top "monkeys and teapots".

And so happy you did, I am glad to have this cozy corner to come to and I always find joy here, thank you.

My blog name came from staring for hours at the photo that is currently my header. I wanted it to be about what I love most about photography which is the light, the light, the beautiful light.

xoxoxo

Hello, Relyn. I've met you before somewhere along the way. It's nice to see you again.

Your blog and its name are cozy and warm, I write that as I sit by a real fire. Blogs are pretty great the way we can do and say what we want, name them as we want.

Thank you for participating in How I Named My blog Day. It's fun to see the ripples going out into the blogosphere.

Hi Relyn,

The time you spent considering what name to pick says much. And it is a perfect name; we all feel cosy and relaxed around here and there gentle humour too. Mine was embarrassingly simple; location and alliteration!

i love your blog name. it was one of the things that drew me in. sitting by the fire is so enjoyable to me - it's warm and cozy and welcoming, you can't step away because you're drawn back to the heat. that is the way your blog is. there is no way i could leave the warmth i feel here, - the music is soothing, the words always inspiring sometimes humorous but mostly filled with love and kindness. love you
i think you know clearly how my blog name came about. ; )

I love how you used your journal to capture the beginnings of your blog! It's a perfect name.... This is a cozy place to visit, and you make me feel just like I'm sitting right in front of your fire!

My sister suggested it. I sent her an email telling her that I was struggling to find the perfect name for a photo blog, gave her my list of current thoughts, and she suggested retinal perspectives.

I ignored it for a while, because I wanted to have a name that I came up with, but in the end, it really was perfect. :)

I like "come sit by my fire". I always feel like I'm sitting in the room with you, having a nice chat.
