Little Rock

capitol silhouette

Our family recently visited Little Rock. We love American history and have a goal to visit every state capitol and presidential museum. Over the years I have been so amazed at the ways in which the capitols vary and really do reflect the people and the state's values. I always leave feeling as though I had gained new insight into a place. While we were in Little Rock, we also visited the National Park created to celebrate the Little Rock Nine and their incredible achievement.

Central High School

Do you know about the Little Rock Nine? They were the brave high school students who integrated Central High School in 1957. They faced incredible persecution in order to create new opportunities for themselves and those who came after. They are brave. Like Ruby. They are heroes. My heroes. My daughter's heroes. Maybe yours, too?

This site is a good place to start learning more.

They are heroes, indeed. I love that you are sharing our country's history with Sloane firsthand in this wonderful way! What a gift. I love visiting the capitols, too. I went to grad school in Montpelier, Vermont, and to this day, that is one of my favorite capitol buildings . . . as well as one of my favorite towns. I'll never forget sitting on the capitol lawn watching Fourth of July fireworks with friends one year--a very beautiful memory for me.

I've always wanted to visit Arkansas. It seems like such an interesting place that is often overlooked by people here in the midwest.

And I've always wanted to see all the presidential museums... so you are really high up on my list of cool people. Just a little bit jealous of you, I am. :-)

That's such a worthy aim, and your photos are wonderfully clear. I didn't know about them, so off to read the links/google.

I can't even imagine how stressful it must have been for the Little Rock Nine as they walked through those hateful crowds and attended school in such a discouraging atmosphere. They were so courageous.

Did you see the episode on Oprah when she brought the Little Rock Nine in as guests? There was a white man in the audience who was a student at the same school then and he can be seen yelling at the African American students in one of the photographs. He told Oprah that he went along with the mob out of peer pressure and fear and that for years afterwards, he felt so ashamed for what he did. He had apologized to one of the Little Rock Nine students when they met several years before the show took place. The Little Rock Nine student forgave him. It was a powerful show.

I think it's great that you are taking your daughter with you during these trips and teaching her about important moments in history.

Oh, and thank you for posting the photo of the Little Rock Nine statue. I didn't know there was a memorial to those students.

The nice thing is to remember we can all be heroes...if we stand firm to what we know is right and honorable and just. I'm glad I dropped by today! How you've captured the last image is memorable.

Gorgeous.

You know, we're in Sacramento often and I've never really toured the area. We need to do that.

So glad you are back Relyn...you were missed while you were away...
What a lovely thing you are doing as a family...learning about our country is so important...and we really need aware and caring, involved people now and in the coming generations! As always you are doing your part. Thank heavens for the Little Rock Nine and all those who stand up against all odds for what is right.
