the tiny, the small

I am so excited to host Krista Knott as my first guest here in this month of personal passions.  Krista is the photographic, word-smithing genius behind  is the blog My Life As I See It.  She's also an editor at The Bright Side Project.  She's the mother of two very loved littles and is a woman who thinks deeply and loves with that same kind of thoughtful passion.  Krista is the kind of woman who makes me resolve to think more before I speak and to savor small moments instead of rushing.  I love visiting her little corner of the world, and I know you will, too.

it's the tiny moments. there are the big things, sure. the milestones, the markers, the great monuments of a life well lived. the large tragedies and comedies that we carry with us, hand down. but i am a big believer in the small, the in between.

i am a working, at home mother to two small children. i spend a large portion of my day dealing with feeding, cleaning, organizing, chaperoning, driving, washing, playing. the big things are the bookends at the end of seasons, the milestones marked by doctor appointments and birthday parties. loose teeth, skinned knees, first words. these are the fireworks.

but i'm talking about the balloons. the tiny puffs of inconsequential day to day life that we carry around with us, tied to strings. so often, i go about my day and i randomly snap pictures of things without thinking too much about it. snap snap snap and each of these moments swell up and float to the top. they stay tied to the chairs i sit in, they wrap around my fingers like diamond rings. they become such a part of our day that my children no longer are afraid they will pop.

sometimes i do it before bed, sometimes a few days later. but i will always go through the gallery on my phone and notice things i didn't before. things that would have been swept away with the breakfast crumbs had i not taken the time to notice them. the way he squats now that he knows how to climb up on chairs. how much she (finally) loves to get dirty. i will not remember the temper tantrum over hitting each other, the argument over eating healthy foods, the absolute nightmare that is the witching hour for children (you know what i'm talking about.) i will forget about the work deadlines that loom over me after they are in bed, the list of to do items that never seem to get crossed off, the fact that i have failed to shower. i will look at the bookmarks of my day and think yes. i love this life of mine. passionately.

Great post Krista. I love that too...the photos as bookmarks, and how we can revisit and learn, and learn, and learn. Details, in writing or photography, come through in stages...almost as if each peels back like an onion.
